Thursday's Treasure

~*~
I could not walk away from this deck of cards at the antique store.  Gorgeous jadite green color, precious kitties, rickrack, and a spool of thread?  Worth every penny of the $3 price tag!
~*~
~*~
I can't make out the artist's name on this signed double deck, but these are so frame-ready beautiful!  I think I paid $4 for these, and the plastic holder is one I've never seen before.  It's hard to tell from the photo, but the holder tilts in toward the center to showcase the cards.  A clear plastic lid (not pictured) completes the ensemble.
~*~
**** This just in!!!  My good friend Karen just sent me a website with tons of info about my card artist!  Apparently these prints are "sugar bun" and "honey bun".  You can read all about this artist here: http://medeiros.weebly.com/.  Thank you, Karen!!!****

For The Collection

I hit the vintage playing card jackpot at Goodwill this week!  Altogether 10 decks of cards for about $8.  Go me!

Three decks of these silver edged ships in one box

~*~
This double deck is one of my all-time favorites.  I didn't realize that they went together to make the tandem bike until I set up for this photo!

~*~
Love the colors and patterns in these outfits!

These hibiscus cards are from a box that reads "Souvenir of Florida".

What a Card!

I snagged this deck of new old stock 70s cards this week.  I find the colors exceptionally gRoOvY, and they  will be cute to include in sosovintage packages for February.  It's kind of Valentine-ish, right?  It does say "hearts" after all ;)

Daily Dose of Cute

You know me and my vintage playing card obsession.  Well, the other day I spotted a bag full of 6 decks of cards.  Five of the decks were plain, basic, new.  One deck, the one holding the little gem above, was a tattered old box held together with masking tape.  I could make out the words "animal rummy" on the side, but there wasn't any identifying info.  No year.  No images.  For $2, I decided to take the chance.  It worked out well for me- and for my cashier friend.  I opened the bag after I paid, gave her the 5 newer decks for her kids and slipped my ratty old box into my bag.  When I got home, I discovered the most precious deck of cards I think I've ever seen- complete with seals, kittens, elephants, puppies, lions and more.  This bunny is my favorite, but if you'd like to see any of the other animals, just let me know :)

Ho Ho Ho

I'm celebrating a little Christmas in July over here with these vintage playing card finds from last week!
~*~
First we have a lovely bow covered tree, and since it's another double bridge deck....
~*~
... we also have a fancy wreath as well!
~*~
I think I'll make these the cards I send out as sosovintage package freebies in November.  Don't mean to freak you out, but really, the holiday season is just around the corner!

Find of the Century

The title of this post may be a *bit* dramatic, but for those of you who already know how obsessed I am with vintage playing cards... well, you'll understand.
~*~
While in Pennsylvania this past week, I had an opportunity to visit my two favorite antique malls.  I will share more of my finds later in the week, but this was one I just couldn't believe!
~*~
Check it out~ A deck of cards where ALL of the backs are different- made specifically for swappers and collectors like me, but back in the 50s.  Here is a shot of most of them:
~*~
Here are more- these are my second runner up favorites:
~*~
And here is my number one favorite card to date!

That bunny!  That color!  Those dots!
~*~
I am going to hope that you all like me too much to hate me about this, but I have to tell you the price.

Thursday's Treasure

You KNOW I've had a lovely day when I have treasures like these to share!  I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw these adorable playing cards on the Salvation Army shelf.

These make a beautiful addition to my collection, and since I only keep one of every deck I find, the rest will get to be shared with some lucky sosovintage customers!

I just can't choose a favorite... can you?

New Additions

I recently found some *new* decks of old cards to add to my growing collection.
~*~
Quail? Pheasants? I don't know, but I love the colors.
~*~
The ever popular squirrels
~*~
I love the harlequin look of these cards, and the pups are so cute and serious.
~*~
These are from an old deck of nature match cards, so I have 2 of each!
~*~
Here's the back of the nature cards- what a happy raccoon!!
~*~
I may start offering sets of these cards in sosovintage. I can't be the only one enamored with these little works of art, can I? And, with the growing popularity of aceos, card sized frames are readily available in most craft stores now. I need a bunch, that's for sure!

Deal Me In

My friend Evelyn of ModishVintage has recently been blog sharing some of her amazing vintage collections . Do check them out by clicking HERE! She has inspired me to share some of my own treasures with you. Are you ready? My name is Jennie, and I am a vintage playing card freak!! There, I said it. It's the first step, right?
~*~

My criteria for purchasing these cards is very simple. I don't care if there is a full deck. I don't care who made them. I don't even care how much they cost, since they generally only go for $1-$5 in thrift shops and antique stores. I care that they are not all bent up and ugly. And, they must not smell.
~*~

Why playing cards, you ask? I sure wish I had an answer for you! I guess I love that the old ones are little pieces of art. I adore their colors and patterns. They remind me of a simpler time. I like to give out vintage rose playing cards with my sosorosey orders, and I often include a fun one with sosovintage orders too. One thing is certain, I have more cards now than I will EVER need. Will I buy more? You betcha!

Creature Comforts

It's the little things that make me happy. Literally and figuratively! When I need a boost, I look no further than my sunroom. So many little treasures beckon from special nooks, you'd have to try really hard not to smile!
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

I found this little vintage rooster dish on a thrift outing this week. It is perched on top of an old Cherrystone Farms candy tin. The colors here make me want to make something...now!!

This little vintage fairy bunny pin is one of my all time favorite possessions. She was a mere $1.50 at the local secondhand shop. Is she magical or what?

This is the back of a vintage deck of playing cards that I found new in their package at the Goodwill. I WILL do something with these one day. Any ideas?
