School Clothes

I'm certainly no fashionista, but these boots are just about the cutest things I've ever seen!  The colors, the roses.... swoon!  We went school clothes shopping yesterday and had so much fun.  I'm sure it won't be like that every year, so I savored it and went a little spending crazy.
~*~
Due to her height, Sophie is currently wearing a child's 7.  I've discovered that some companies are making the trashiest looking clothing for kids!  It's ridiculous!  Why would I want my 5 year old to look like a tramp?
~*~
My absolute favorite spot to shop this year has been H&M.  Their fall collection has such hip, adorable, and affordable things for Sophie's age/size.  Their things are the perfect match for her personality, too.  Bright, funky, comfortable.  Just like these boots.
~*~
So, where do you and your children like to do your back-to-school shopping?

Makeover Monday: 8/29

For this week's project, I used some heavy duty natural jute twine.  500 feet of it to be precise!
~*~

Voila!  A tall clutter keeper, perfect for stowing kitchen utensils.  This was suggested by a customer, and I had my doubts about whether it would be stable with large items inside.  Turns out this baby is super steady- that's a full size set of salad servers and a heavy wooden rolling pin in there.  The keeper didn't even think about falling over with this load.  Jute is a miracle fiber!
~*~
We never lost power from Irene, and had only a few branches down in the yard.  Whew!  Hopefully this week will be free of natural (and unnatural) disasters around here.  It's the last week of summer vacation.  Mike starts a new job tomorrow, and Sophie and I get to go to her new school for an Open House on Friday.  We're all heading up to Gettysburg over Labor Day weekend for a last hurrah with my folks.   I'll pick up my remaining items from The Muse on the way, so be on the lookout for new goodies in sosorosey soon!  Hope your last week of summer is a great one!!

Daily Dose of Cute

How sweet is this little bunny toothpick holder?  So teeny, so white.  I *almost* threw this out by accident yesterday because it was wrapped in a piece of white paper with other larger and heavier items.  Yet another reason to unwrap and wash/list/put away your thrift finds within a reasonable timeframe after purchase- less chance of forgetting what you bought!
~*~
As you can see, we still have power.  Woohoo!  The storm hasn't quite made its way to our neck of the woods yet, though.  We are getting ready to go on a family walk through the neighborhood to burn off a little energy and try to ward off cabin fever.  We shall see what tonight brings.  Donna, thank you for thinking of us- you are the best!!

Friday's Favorite Fabric Finds

I've been on a fabric buying spree since I returned from vacation!  These are just a few of the *new* sheet designs coming to sosovintage in the next few days.
~*~
Gorgeous white cherry blossom branches on aqua
~*~
I had this in blue at one point, and I have it in yellow.  The pink is by far my favorite- surprise!
~*~
Really bright and bold varied width stripes in green and blues
~*~
I have this in the blue colorway.  Love the orange and yellow combo!
~*~

Wow, there is a LOT going on in this fabric!  Flowers and dots and gingham- oh my!
~*~

I know it sounds silly, but I really don't like to buy fitted sheets because they are too hard to fold nicely.  I made an exception for this pattern, though.  These colorful bouquets are beautiful!
~*~
We are currently bracing for Hurricane Irene, and doing our best to stock up on necessary supplies.  If I'm not blogging this weekend, you'll know that our power is out.  The worst of it will be Saturday night, but we never know how long we'll be out of commission.  Our neighborhood has it's own water supply, so we should be able to flush toilets and take cold showers.  We just have our fingers crossed that the winds don't cause any of our towering trees to come crashing down on the roof or cars.  We'll be sleeping downstairs for sure!  I'll be back with the scoop as soon as I can.  If you are also in the path of the storm, stay safe!

Thursday's Treasure

Well, the new thrift store has potential!  It has only been open for a few days, so it remains to be seen if they can keep up their inventory.  It is quite large and fairly well laid out.  Many aisles of knick knacks that are pretty well organized.  Prices are excellent, and I am now a card-carrying member, too.  This entitles me to 30% off every Thursday- woot.  They even have a website which I perused on my phone while waiting for the place to open.  The site has a code for $5 off on your first shopping trip, so I got a big bunch of goodies for about $20.  This enamelware platter is one of my favorite finds- beautiful colors and great condition, just in time for fall!  Care to guess what I paid for it?

An Antler Story

Does anyone remember that song that goes "I was country... when country wasn't cool"?  Well, I was antler, when antler wasn't cool!  Truly, I have had a fixation with all things bone and carcass related for almost two decades.  It seems to have begun with my travels out west, and each find I make cements my obsession even more.  Fortunately for all involved, my finds of this sort are relatively few and far between.
~*~
I hit the jackpot on this last vacation, though.  Not only did I find a pile of bleached out cow bones (no head, bummer), I found this fantastic three pronged antler.  I'm guessing it's from a deer, but at only three years old, this is a pretty big half-rack.  Maybe an elk?
~*~
The best part of this antler find was that I spied it many yards away in a muddle of sage brush - from a moving vehicle!  My mind quickly registered "white bone thing" the same way it does that "pink pyrex" trick while thrift shopping.  I shouted for my dad to stop the car, ran over, and triumphantly held the prize over my head like a trophy.  My heart was beating fast, and I felt like a champion!  Still do, every time I look at it.  Hehe.
~*~
So, um.  Does anyone else out there understand this feeling?

20 BEST TWENTY!

I'm super excited to announce that sosorosey has been chosen to be featured on 20 BEST TWENTY in the home decor section!  Click on the logo above to go straight to this awesome site, and if you'd like to see my jute bowls featured, go over to the *TO STYLE* and * HOME DECOR* spot.
~*~
You can see my bowls on the BLOG, too.  Sometime during the next 30 days, my shop will have a special feature on that blog.  When that happens, I'll let you know... there will be a special coupon code to go with the feature.  I'm thinking free shipping, woot woot!

Makeover Monday: 8/22

I won't deja vu you again by showing the fabric for this bowl a third time!  I'm pleased to announce that it is finished, though.  It's hard to believe this contains two pairs of pants, two shirts and a jacket, isn't it?  After all these years, it still amazes me how much fabric goes into crocheted bowls and rugs.  I guess when it fails to amaze me, it will be time to quit!
~*~
So, we're safely back from vacation and looking forward to a relatively quiet week around here.  Time to play catch up with laundry, housework, and orders.  I found out today that a new thrift store opened while I was away- and it's right across the street from my usual Tuesday thrift stop!  I'll be checking that out tomorrow for sure- I'll let you know how that goes.  My baby starts kindergarten two weeks from tomorrow!  Have your kids already started back?  How's your week looking?  Hope it's a great one!!

The Results

Just a quick note to let you know that I've posted the meaning of the little quizette from yesterday in the comment section of that post.  I'm trying not to ruin it for anyone just happening by who wants to play along.  I hope you had fun with it!

Sociology Class: aka Spill It Session #7

fabulous squirrel crayons from ivylanedesigns.etsy.com
Waaaaaaay back in high school, I took an Intro to Sociology class.  Loved my teacher, Mr. Winslow.  A little on the Gene Wilder eccentric side.  All these years later, I still remember a "test" he gave the class.  I was so impressed with how dead-on it ended up being.  Would you like to take it?  OK!  All you have to do is leave a comment with the following information: favorite color and 3 adjectives that describe why you like it, favorite animal and 3 adjectives that describe why you like it.
~*~
For me, my favorite animal is a penguin.  Cute, odd, and funny.  Favorite color: pink.  Old-fashioned, calm, feminine.
~*~
I'll be back tomorrow to tell you what your answers "mean".  Don't worry, it's nothing to be embarrassed or weirded out about.  Can't wait to see what you all come up with!!

Friday's Favorite Flora and Fauna Finds

Well, I haven't been thrifting on vacation, so I don't have fabric to share today.  BUT, I thought you might enjoy seeing some of the amazing wildfowers and animals we have been spying around here.  The most plentiful animal this year has been the chipmunks, but they were too fast to capture in photos!
~*~
These little lizards are quick, too, but they stop to warm up sometimes so you can click a quick shot.
~*~
Now this is no little lizard- he's about 10" long.  My dad snapped this shot when he accidentally scared this one out of some juniper shade.  When you see the heads of these big lizards, your first thought is always $#@^& SNAKE &@^&*$!!!
~*~
Not into the scaly creatures?  Then you will appreciate this furry little jackrabbit as much as we did.  He hopped across the road right in front of our car, then sat as still as a statue.  I think he thought he was blending in.  Indeed, had we not seen him arrive at this spot, we might not have noticed him at all.
~*~
It must have been an unusually wet spring and summer in the desert, because we have seen wildflowers here this year that I haven't seen in the 18 years I've been visiting!  Love these little orange ones, and you can see the rabbit ear cactus thriving in the background.
~*~
The barrel cactus is far less common than the rabbit ear.  We found this one while rockhounding out at Klondike Bluffs.  Wouldn't want to fall on this baby!
~*~
I'm pretty sure this one is called fireweed.  It sure does light up the surrounding area!
~*~

And last but not least, there's this pretty purple one.  Maybe lupine?  I love the star shaped leaves as much as the blossoms!
~*~
I hope you've enjoyed my little tour.  I could go on and on, but then you'd all blame me for putting you to sleep on your keyboards.  I will have some scenery and people shots to share next week :)

Thursday's Treasure

Isn't this THE most precious guinea pig photo ever?  A big, big thank you to Sarah of Koerner Creations Photography for sharing this with me... that's a sosorosey bowl in there!  I love the little hand sticking over the side.  And the hats!!

Fun Find

I found a bag filled with 6 of these boxes at the thrift store the other day.  The bag was hanging amongst hundreds of other bags, with no rhyme or reason as to the contents or groupings.  It must have been the turquoise that caught my eye.  That and the fact that the boxes looked so new but yet, somehow so old.
~*~
Now, I don't know about you, but once I've done my cursory condition check to be sure I want to make a purchase, I don't like to sit and overly examine my things until I get home.  So, it wasn't until the next day that I pulled these out and tried to figure out what they actually were.
~*~
The back reads " Turquoise leads for Draftsmen's Holders are made from a separate basic formula for each degree, giving the same precision grading, strength and smoothness found in "chemi-sealed" turquoise drawing pencils.  Scientific research has developed in these leads an opacity and evenness of line which insures perfect blue prints direct from uninked tracings."
~*~
Here's the part of the back that I REALLY liked- copyright 1935!!!!
~*~
Upon opening them, I found that 3 of the 6 boxes still contain their 6 unused leads.  These boxes are made of balsa wood, and there are little holes in the top and bottom to keep the leads safe.  It sure worked, wouldn't you say?
~*~
I'm just in awe of the condition of something so fragile, after 76 years.  Wouldn't some vintage-loving architect love to have these?  Should I part with a couple of them?  How do I even figure out what to charge?  I'd love your input if you have any ideas.  For now, I'm keeping them displayed on my own shelf as a reminder that you just never know what you will find when you go a-thriftin"!!

Seriously?

Yep.  This answers the question "What will they think of next?"  I truly could not believe my eyes when I saw this yarn in the craft store the other day.  It took my mind a few minutes to grasp that this was really what it says it is.  I picked it up, looked both ways, then gently stuck my nose in the end of the skein.  Oh please, you would have too!  I didn't stop there, either.  I smelled all the ones they had in stock: powder, chamomile, aloe, rose petal.
~*~
So, these are very lightly scented- not overpowering at all.  I just can't help but wonder about this, though.  I mean, how did they do this?  Will the scent remain once the yarn has been washed?  Will people really buy these for the smell?  I DID purchase the aloe, but only because of the color.  I couldn't really smell that one anyway.  What do you think of this craziness?

Makeover Monday: 8/15

Deja vu!  Yes, this is the same fabric shot from last week.  I'm still working on this project, but I did make some progress to show you!
~*~
Last week I had only completed the very bottom blue part.  Now I've gotten into the fun bit- adding the ruffles!  It is 4" high and about 5" wide (including the ruffles).  I should have the finished product to show off sometime soon!!  Hope my special customer is liking what she sees so far ;)
~*~
So, if you've popped into one of my shops recently, you've seen that I am on vacation!  Guess where I am??  Back in Moab, Utah!!  I'll be here through Saturday, living the crazy desert lifestyle.  Up and out early to beat the heat, back in from adventuring around lunch time, then lazing around the pool in the afternoon.  Maybe a siesta.  Back out for dinner and more adventures when it starts to cool down in the evening.
~*~
We have some fun trips we're hoping to do- including getting Sophie on her first rafting trip down the Colorado River.  I'll still be online and blogging away, and I plan to post photos, too.  Hope you have an equally exciting week on tap!!

Kristine's Mix

Hot pink, lime green and royal purple.  You called it, Kristine- this is a lovely mix indeed!  I have been hard at work making new lacy mum combos.  Thanks to all for the suggestions!  You should see the ones you thought up in sosorosey at some point- if you don't, it's because I haven't found just the right shade of a certain color.  I'm not giving up, though!

Neato News

Do people even say neato anymore?  Oh, well.  I do.  And speaking of "I do", guess what??  The hay bale wedding from June was featured yesterday on Style Me Pretty, the Little Black Book Blog!  Sarah's florist submitted the photos, and voila, they were chosen.  You can click the link to scoot on over and check out the gorgeous shots from this special wedding.  Be sure to click on the text link within the article that says "And there are more of them right here".  You definitely must see page two of that gallery for the BEST photo of the hay bale covers... and lots of other really drool-worthy details, too.  Congratulations on the feature, Sarah, and thank you for including the sosovintage link under "fabric dealer"!!

Friday's Favorite Fabric Finds

It's been tough picking these last couple of weeks.  Maybe because of yard sale season?  I did manage to find a few pretties, though.  Take a peek!
~*~
The epitome of shabby chic- dainty roses and scrolly vines on ecru
~*~

Sweetly detailed wildflower mix with vibrant purple and red
~*~
I have this one with green accents- fun to find the peach and pink together
~*~
A faded spring garden complete with tulip, daffodil, iris and hyacinth blooms
~*~
Just in the last few months I've had the striped and faux patchwork version of this one.  Can't go wrong with blue, pink, yellow and green!
~*~

Love these diminutive blossoms and leaves in orange and aqua.  I am 99.9% positive that we had these sheets when I was growing up.  Do you recognize this one, Mom?
~*~
And my favorite of the week- gorgeous big pale pink flowers with minty green forget-me-nots.  And guess what?  This is a king size sheet which = plenty of beauty to go around!!
~*~
Hope you have yourself a super special weekend!

Thursday's Treasure

These snappy napkins caught my eye with their bold colors and busy design.  You have to look closely to see just how extra fabulous wonderful they are, though.  Come closer....
~*~
~*~
Ah, yes.  You're seeing it correctly.  Early Vera Neumann- back when she used lower case letters.  I have 4 of these in excellent condition.  Someone is going to have a Vera merry Christmas!!!  I couldn't help myself.
~*~
In even more exciting news, the best mom EVER is celebrating her birthday today!!  Happy Birthday, you wonderful lady... can't wait to celebrate with you on Saturday!

Can You Guess?

I made a little something new based on a freebie pattern I tossed in my bag at the craft store.
What could it be?  Any ideas?
