Wednesday's Works

~*~
I've been fortunate to have a few custom orders rolling in to sosorosey!  This jute wine bag was specially made to accommodate a large bottle of wine.
~*~

 ~*~
I made some stars for a customer from her baby's blanket back in 2010, and she recently came back for more- for the new baby!  She sent me two bamboo receiving blankets, and these 6 stars are the result.  I had never worked with bamboo fabric- it worked up much like gauzy cotton, with a slight fray to the edges.  Super soft!
~*~
~*~
My most important work today involves being a mother to my little batling.  She got to dress up for her class party, and I led the "ghost making" station.  Good fun, and now we're preparing for some trick or treating around the neighborhood.  Woohoo!   Happy Halloween!

Tuesday's Treat

~*~
How precious is this print?  I adore everything about it- the shapes, the colors, the patterns!  I found it while peeking in at my activity feed.  The etsy shop is called The Joy of Color, and the artist, Yael Berger is located in Tel Aviv Israel.  How cool is it that for less than what you'd pay to go out to dinner, you can own art that comes from a world away?  I don't know Yael, and haven't (yet) ordered from her, but her feedback speaks for itself.  I hope you enjoy poking around in this lovely shop as much as I do!

Unbelievable!

~*~
It's a good thing I'm not (too much of) a betting woman, because I'd have bet the farm we'd be without power by now!  The wind gusts are getting creepily strong, though, and the storm is not expected to peak here until the wee hours of the morning.  Until then, I will be cozied up on the couch enjoying every minute of electricity and watching The Weather Channel.  And crocheting, of course ;)

Makeover Monday: 10/29

 ~*~
I picked out some Christmas-ish crochet thread the other day.
~*~
~*~
And made a new vintage style potholder for sosorosey.  This photo doesn't do it justice- the light here isn't the best right now ;).  I think this would make such a nice holiday hostess gift, don't you?  I'll have it in the shop once I'm able to take better photos.
~*~
Still have power!  Winds are picking up, though, and the rain is coming down.  Off to go watch the weather channel...

And this...

~*~
... is why I'm not sleeping upstairs!  Still hanging on to our power, though!

Frankenstorm

~*~
Oh, she's looking like a doozy, folks!  Hurricane Sandy (or the freakish amalgamation of storms that meteorologists are dubbing "Frankenstorm") is on target to hit our area very soon.  The latest from MSN can be seen HERE.
~*~
So what is it like in the northern VA area?  I ventured to the store today in search of bottled water and a lantern.  I found a near empty water aisle and no lanterns to speak of.  But, we're probably as prepared as we will be.  We have enough tuna and peanut butter to last us for quite awhile.  Lots of candles, flashlights and batteries.  Gas in the cars and gas for the grill.  Charged up devices.  Firewood.  Plans to sleep in the basement.  And plans to be without power, probably starting sometime tomorrow.  Maybe we'll keep it until Monday, but our neighborhood is notorious for losing it as soon as the wind begins to consider gusting.
~*~
So, my hatches are battened.  If I don't post for a few days, you'll know I'm just miserable without electricity.  For my friends in the path of this crazy monster, stay safe!  See you all on the flipside.

Friday's Favorite Fabric Finds

It's been all about autumn in these parts, but we don't want to forget the flowers!
~*~

~*~
What a hodge podge week we've had.  All three of us have a nasty cold that just doesn't seem to want to let go.  For me, it leaves me tired and feeling like I'm always forgetting something.  Just not quite "all there".
~*~
We have a very busy weekend ahead.  Tonight is Fall Fest at Sophie's school, where the kids get to trick or treat through the halls.  There was a lot of PTA work involved to prepare for this event, and I will be "working" tonight from 530-9ish.  In addition to the regular weekend errands, we are having our carpets professionally cleaned on Saturday.  This will be wonderful to have done, but it promises to add a bit of stress in the doing.  And as for Sunday, well, it sounds like we may have a hurricane/winter storm to contend with!  I'll keep you posted on that one.
~*~
And what do YOU have going on this weekend?

Thursday's Treasure

~*~
The newest thrift store around here (Savers) has a section near the sheets for unused fabric.  I always look but rarely buy, since it's somewhat difficult for me to authenticate age of material.  Unless of course it has a date or is beyond obviously vintage.  And sometimes that happens!
~*~
~*~
Flocked fabric in excellent condition is so hard to find.  And I now have about 2 yards of each of these.  Wouldn't they make precious baby dresses?
~*~
What treasures have you found lately?

Wednesday's Works

 ~*~
I've been experimenting with different "toppers" on my string bowls in anticipation of the winter holidays!
~*~
~*~
Another big project going on around here has been Sophie's "Panda of the Week" poster.  I am really happy with the way it turned out :)

What have you been toiling away on this week?

Gurley Girl

I first became aware of Gurley candles a few years ago, and have always loved their sweet faces.  I've sold a couple in sosovintage, and always keep my eyes open for them when I'm out and about.  I saw several angels in an antique store one year, and am STILL kicking myself for not buying one for myself.
~*~
 ~*~
Imagine my delight when I spied this sweetie inside a hanging bag at the thrift store!  She is one of the originals, and still has her 15 cent paper base attached.  Her wings are the most delicate shade of aqua, and the little squares of silver glitter are swoon-worthy!
~*~
 ~*~
This sweet green elf was in the same bag... also a 15 cent guy.
~*~
 ~*~
Yep- same bag!!  Choir boy, lamb, and baby Jesus.  These do not have cardboard bases, but they are in excellent condition.
~*~
 ~*~
This truly wasn't a very big bag!  But the pilgrim boy and girl were there as well.  I couldn't believe my good fortune.  And because we're all friends here, I know you will appreciate that the price of the bag was $1.99.  And it was 30% off day!!
~*~
 ~*~
A very important thrifter lesson- always look for more!  There were no other hanging bags, but I found this taller Indian boy on a shelf...
~*~
 ~*~
... alongside his girlfriend.
~*~
~*~
Scouted the candle aisle before leaving (the others were in "holiday"), and look!  Thirty nine cent Santa still in his shrink wrap!!!  Whoa!!!  One of the best thrifting days ever :)
~*~
Interested in learning a bit more about the Gurley Novelty Co.?  Click HERE.  Most of these will be offered in sosovintage in the coming days.  First dibs to blog readers- so if you see something you must have, just let me know.  As long as it isn't the angel... she's mine!

Makeover Monday: 10/22

 ~*~
I chose this little pink bowl as my makeover subject in honor of breast cancer awareness month.  I made her awhile ago and always thought she needed a little something extra to make her just perfect.
~*~
 ~*~
This scrap of fabric is from an old, stained, full-of-holes apron.

~*~
Awwww- a match made in crochet heaven :)

Daily Dose of Adorable

~*~
One of my most favorite finds ever!  This bespectacled bunny holding her bunny is absolutely precious, and just about as perfect as she can be.  Marked "Knickerbocker No. Hollywood Calif." on the back.  Don't think I can part with this one, folks!

Friday's Favorite Fabric Finds

I lost a day!  But, I'm back with some beautiful yellow and/or blue fabrics to share.  All of these would be absolutely gorgeous as inspiration for a baby boy quilt.
~*~

~*~
The first and last are my personal favorites this week- how about you?
~*~
The leaves are at their peak around here, and fall is in perfect season.  Sophie has been chosen as "Panda of the Week" for her class for next week, so we have lots to do to prepare her special poster.  We also have a bat costume to finalize.  What's on your agenda for this weekend?

Another Thursday's Treasure

Sophie's photo shoot wearing *my* scarf this morning...
~*~

~*~
You wear it well, Sweetpea!

Thursday's Treasure

~*~
Well, zippity-doo-da!  A sosovintage treasure was featured on the Etsy blog this week in their "Get the Look Decor: Country Chic" post!  I found this out by looking at my shopowner stats... I found 187 views coming to my shop from Etsy's blog and did a little investigating.  You just never know where you or your shop will turn up :)

Wednesday's Works

~*~
When I'm feeling under the weather, I like to "comfort crochet".  This involves snuggling up in my favorite PJs, under my favorite blankets, watching my favorite shows, and crocheting something purely for pleasure.  This lacy scarf is the result of two evenings of comfort crochet... a gorgeous deep periwinkle blue cotton and all mine!
 ~*~
~*~
One of my PTA jobs is *hospitality*.  So, among other things, any time there is a special week, I get to be the person who finds and purchases gifts for the people being recognized.  This week is Custodial Service Employee Week AND School Lunch Week, so I had 11 items to prepare.
~*~
I searched high and low to find something nice and special within our budget ($3-$5), and believe me, it wasn't easy.  These pretty red tealight lanterns jumped out at me in Ikea, though.
~*~

~*~
I made a personalized note for each, and they look super cute.  The next observance isn't until November, and it is just for one person- our school French teacher.  I've been scouting some cute things on Etsy for her gift ;)

Tuesday's Treat

 ~*~
Fortified with caffeine and ibuprofin, I was able to rally today and fulfill my first grade field trip chaperon duties.  It was an exquisite fall day- perfect weather for visiting Hartland Orchard in the foothills of the Shenandoah Mountains.
~*~
~*~
The trees were absolutely gorgeous- this photo doesn't do this shade of red justice at all.
~*~
 ~*~
There were lots of activities for the kids to do.  This giant bounce thing was a big hit, as was the slide you see in the background.  We went on a hayride around the orchard, and spent way more time in the corn maze than we should have.  Who knew it would really be hard to find our way out of it?!  We actually never did get out the way we were supposed to; we ended up crashing through the side so that we didn't miss the hayride!
~*~
~*~
The final activity of the day was watching three of the cutest little piggies do a race.  This one was the clear winner, and they were so fast I couldn't get all three in one shot!
~*~
All in all, a wonderful time.  Remind me next year, though, that I can be one of those parents who drives and meets everyone there.  The loud bus and being responsible for kids other than my own is something I can live without!!

Makeover Monday (better late than never)

~*~
I almost used these two pillowcases for my Craft Challenge project.  We've got honey gold, pink flambe, titanium and rhapsody represented.  The fabric itself is unbelievably soft- like the smoothest flannel, but not flannel.
~*~
~*~
I decided that a coaster would best enhance the muted shades.  If you look closely, the delicate pattern can be seen peeking out from some of the stitches, too.  This would be perfect for a coastal cottage table!
